Article Snippet: Heterosexual transmission is the most common means of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.1 The virus appears to enter cells through contact with receptors on Langerhans cells, other macrophages, and CD4 T lymphocytes.2-4 More knowledge is needed regarding factors that influence these target cells in the subepithelium of the vagina and cervix, both under normal conditions and with the use of contraceptive and intravaginal agents.. In addition, factors that influence the integrity of the epithelial barrier are needed.. A variety of factors increase the host susceptibility to and infectiousness of HIV, including host genetics, the stage of infection, HIV receptors, administration of antiretroviral therapy, and other conditions in the host.1 Cervical infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae5 and Chlamydia trachomatis6 and vaginal infection with Candida and bacterial vaginosis5 have been associated with HIV acquisition in cohort studies and with HIV shedding in the genital tract of infected women.7 Cervical and vaginal inflammation was also associated with HIV shedding among infected women.1 Further, injectable progesterones have been associated with the acquisition of HIV,5, 8 and oral contraception has been associated with HIV shedding.7 In this study we evaluated the number of vaginal epithelial cells and the number and specific type of immune cells at 3 different times in the normal menstrual cycle of subjects without HIV. |
